An Approach to Incorporating CBR Concepts in IR Systems

چکیده

Information retrieval (IR) is concerned with techniques that can provide effective access to large databases of objects that contain primarily text. It is generally assumed that there is a wide variety of users and a large number of potential queries. Although these characteristics are different than those of a typical case-based reasoning (CBR) application, there are opportunities for integration of the two approaches. To demonstrate that this is possible, we first describe IR techniques in more detail. After a brief overview of CBR, we then outline an approach to integration that takes advantage of the strengths of both approaches. We also give a simple example of how an integrated CBR/IR system could be used to address a real information need.

Using Statutes-Based IR to Drive Legal CBR

$EVWUDFW We present and discuss the use of Information Retrieval (IR) to drive Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) in legal case retrieval. This is a hybrid IRCBR approach to legal text indexing and retrieval. Our approach is based on our intuitive model of how humans represent, recognize and retrieve concepts. We point out the different components and processes involved in this human mental conceptuali...

Using CBR to Drive IR

We discuss the use of Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) to drive an Information Retrieval (IR) system. Our hybrid CBR-IR approach takes as input a standard frame-based representation of a problem case, and outputs texts of relevant cases retrieved from a document corpus dramatically larger than the case base available to the CBR system. While the smaller case base is accessible by the usual case-based...

Case-based Reasoning Model Applied to Information Retrieval

This paper is about work in progress on the application of Case Based Reasoning (CBR) to problems of Information Retrieval (IR). Many approaches to IR have already been developed. They inv olve techniques such as keyword searches and the use of boolean queries which are applied to databases or indexes. Other methods are based on probabilistic or statistical analysis of occurrences of words or p...

MEMS Design Synthesis: Integrating Case-based Reasoning and Multi-objective Genetic Algorithms

A case-based reasoning (CBR) knowledge base has been incorporated into a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) design tool that uses a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) to synthesize and optimize conceptual designs. CBR utilizes previously successful MEMS designs and sub-assemblies as building blocks stored in an indexed case library, which serves as the knowledge base for the synthesi...
